Abstract
The objective of the article is to make a critical assessment of the ecological behavior of the Latin American citizen based on the influence of the philosophical currents of environmental thought in the region, for this, the hermeneutic analysis of works by great thinkers of the region was used as a methodology, such as Boff (1997, 2012, 2015), Maya (2003, 2008), Rozzi (2001, 2007, 2012), Leff (2010, 2011, 2020), among others. It was possible to determine that the ecological behavior of citizens has been governed by the guidelines of the prevailing political system, based on the sole principle of exploitation of natural resources for economic benefits, leaving aside ecocentric thinking, it is expected that the recent agreement of Escazú and the influence exerted by ecological thinkers model social behavior, starting from the democratization of environmental information, the creation of sustainable legal bases and the organized participation of citizens.
