Abstract

Two in vitro extenders for dilution of goat semen, Yolk-Citrate (A) and Yolk-skim milk (B), were evaluated. Semen was collected from four males using an artificial vagina and kept at 30"C prior to and during dilution at 1/6 semen/extender. The resulting solutions were stored at room temperature (20-26ºC) and under refrigeration (4ºC) for 96 hours. Sperm motility (0-5) and progressive motility (%) were determined at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 hours. Semen with minimum motility values of 3 and 60% progressive motility were considered acceptable. At room temperature, sperm dilutions prepared with extender B were viable for up to 6 hours, while those prepared with A were viable at 48 hours. Under refrigeration, the solution prepared with extender A maintained good viability for 96 hours, while that prepared with B ceased to function after 48 hours. Yolk-Citrate (A) is clearly the more effective extender for dilution of goat semen, conserving spermatic viability for a longer period of time.
