One of the main purposes of the critical success factors (CSF) is to gather the information needs for fundamental administrative decision making. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the literature to explore and identify the CSFs that influence the development of e-government and analyze its relevant characteristics to achieve a successful e-government project. The search strategy identified 785 results of which 31 primary studies were selected. The systematic review identified 11 critical success factors and prioritized the most important for the development of e-government. The importance of CSFs is based on the frequency with which they are identified in the studies considered as primary.
