Abstract

The present research, carried out in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was designed to determine the frequency of Toxoplasma gondii infection in swine destined for human consumption. Serum samples (n=303) were collected from a slaughterhouse and analyzed by ELISA test. The frequency of positive sera was 9.57% (0.270 cut off) with a 95% confidence interval (6.26-12.88% ). Although sorne difference in the incidence of positive sera was found in female (10.31 %) and male (9.22%) pigs, it was not statistically significant (P > 0,05). These results show that pig meat consumption may be an important source of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans.
