Abstract
Spatializing susceptible river flood areas will be very helpful for the Management and Planning Unit of Iguatemi river (Brazilian State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) through the creation of digital elevation model (DEM) within GIS SAGA interface. From a robust development of DEM drainage network (30 x 30 m), we could create some cartographical products as vertical distance maps, closed depressions topolo-gical maps, surface runoff map, maps of topographical humidity index, among other cartographical products. At last, we could spatialize relevant regional flood scenarios by the sum and interpolation of layers data and aspects. The study area shows susceptible flooding areas almost trapped on the drainage banks of its main tributaries and its main river itself, due to hydrological factors as: the embedded drainage; the predominantly smooth or plane relief; and soils which have a high infiltration rate. These critical flood areas are being located at rural settlements, indigenous villages and important regional roads to the movement of people and goods.
