Abstract

The present study evaluates of the impact of improved nutrition on 175 alpacas of both sexes and different ages raised intensively during a two month period at a quarantine station in Tacna, Peru. The animals, brought from the high elevation puna region, were fed alfalfa hay and a commercial concentrate for milk cattle. At the end of the quarantine, female weights had increased between 3.3 and 7 kg and the males 4.4 to 6.6 kg, while the suris registered greater weight gains than the huacayas. This remarkable increase in body weight during just 60 days shows rapid physical recovery of animals under intensive production conditions.
