Abstract

The Verbenaceae are represented in Peru by 23 genera and 201 species (Brako & Zarucchi, 1993; Ulloa Ulloa et al., 2004), between herbs, shrubs and trees, besides lianas and vines. Here we recognize 38 species and 16 varieties as endemics in 12 genera. Aegiphila, Citharexylum and Verbena are genera with more endemic species. We applied IUCN categories and criteria to 17 taxa. Endemic taxa are found mainly in Mesoandean and Desert Shrubland regions, between 1000 and 3500 m elevation. None of the endemic taxa have been recorded within Peru's protected areas system.
