N2 - The title compounds have been synthesized and their liquid-crystal properties investigated. The reported ferrocene derivatives exhibited enantiotropic nematic and/or smectic A phases associated with broad anisotropic domains. The molecular arrangement within the smectic A phases was studied by X-ray diffraction. The experimental data, compared to the values obtained from CPK models, suggested a monolayer molecular organization with a pronounced chain disorganization for the medium- and long-chain derivatives.
