Elections and army officers: Peru 1827-1896

The article analyzes the political activities and speeches of the Peruvian Army officers during the elections held in between 1892 and 1896. The Army officers were key figures in the Peruvian political process: they were the main leaders and participated in all electoral campaign's phases. It was fairly common that elections overlapped with coups d'etat. To understand the political system one cannot separate coups d'etat from elections.In general terms, this long period, a natural outcome of the Cadiz Courts, can be divided into two blocks: the first one, of 1827-1850, in which no formal political organizations existed; and the second one, of 1850-1896, in which formal organizations existed.
