N2 - This paper reviews the fundamental characteristics of the irrigation system and its processes of change in the Colca Valley, department of Arequipa, Peru. This micro region from southern Peru, consists of fourteen peasant communities that continue practicing traditional agriculture and maintaining a complex system ritual where the cult to water and apus mountain remains inextricably linked to the agricultural activity, even over Peruvian legislation about irrigation water use.
